When California became a state in 1850, Orange County was part of greater Los Angeles County. Orange County, which got its name from the prominent citrus industry that was blossoming within its borders, did not officially break away from Los Angeles County until 1889. In 1889, Orange County had only 3 incorporated cities and a population of around 15,000. In the more than 100 years since its initial formation, Orange County has grown to a population of more than 3,000,000 with 34 incorporated cities.
