The City of Mission Viejo was originally part of Rancho Mission Viejo. For more than a hundred years, the Ranch was primarily used for cattle grazing. In 1965, development of Mission Viejo for residential housing became a reality when the Orange County Board of Supervisors approved a master plan for the city. Mission Viejo is now primarily a residential city, with most of the houses reflecting a Spanish mission style design.
Mission Viejo was incorporated as a city in 1988, and will be celebrating its 20th Anniversary in March 2008.
